Basketball at UCLA

This past Thursday I got my glasses fixed in the morning at Rowland Heights, CA (here in SoCal). Praise God that I can see better through them now! However, I am still waiting for my new pair of contact lenses to arrive from the factory, hopefully before I fly back up to Seattle Monday. You can pray for me about that!

After returning from eye care, I drove out to UCLA to meet up with my old Stanford friend Grant. It was actually the second time I saw him in the last three weeks, because Grant had come up to Seattle earlier and we had met up there. This time I got to go see where Grant lives down here (he goes to med school at UCLA). We had a quick lunch, then it was off to the campus to play some basketball at Wooden Center. (I don't remember when was the last time I have been to UCLA. Maybe it was the first time for me on campus!)

It was nice to play in a gym. The place wasn't too crowded and we settled in with some other students for a couple half-court games. Both of us wasn't really in shape, so we didn't play too long, but we did play OK. I made some nice shots and Grant displayed his sound all-around game to the underclassmen.

Afterwards we went back to Grant's apartment to hangout, and I drove back to Alhambra through the evening traffic for dinner with my old church friends--Dave, Helen, and Peter. We were part of the same Chinese youth group growing up. I keep in touch with Dave the most, and it was the first time I saw Peter in years. It's funny how the more we change, the more we stay the same.

Post-dinner (at this great Taiwanese restaurant on Valley Blvd), Helen and Dave came over to my parents' house to play some Scrabble. Then, it was time to go with my parents to pick up my brother Gid and his wife Julia from the Burbank airport. Their flight had been delayed, and so we didn't pick them up until after midnight! It was a long day, but a fruitful one with family and friends.

Friday was more time with family, and today I'll be heading with Gid, Julia, our friend Anthony and his wife Laura, to our other friend Andrew's wedding in Pasadena. I will see plenty more of my old friends there.

I thank God for the opportunities to stay in touch with friends. Relationships are important and can be maintained, regardless of geographical, cultural, national, social, or organizational distance and differences. The one thing that we should all have in common is our faith in God, and our love for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. When we have that bond in the spirit, we can connect with each other at a level that is deeper than any worldly ties. Praise the Lord for bringing all of us into His eternal family!
